On March 5, 1898, D. H. Tompkins, Secretary of State of South Carolina, wrote to H. S. Swain of Chicago indicating that "the railroads are now paying their taxes," pursuit to the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in In Re Tyler (1893)..
Clark Spence of the University of Illinois Department of History gave this letter to the Illinois Historical Survey in 1974.
