Society for the Urban Residential Environment, Urbana, Ill. Newsletters, 1976-1980

The Society for the Urban Residential Environment (SURE) was founded in 1975 "to preserve and improve the essential character of the intact urban and suburban residential areas" of Champaign, Urbana, and Champaign County, Ill. Maintaining that local governments paid more attention to business interests and land developers than to area residents in making important civic decisions, SURE lobbied for energy conservation; the improvement of parks, roads, and schools; property tax reform; stricter regulation of developers; and uniform building and zoning codes. SURE's leading concern was to have Windsor Road extended and improved through the twin cities in order to relieve congestion on other streets.

The collection contains an incomplete run of the bimonthly SURE newsletter, Sept. 1976 - Feb. 1980, as well as other miscellaneous papers. James P. Neal of Urbana served as SURE's president. Marguerite J. Pease gave the collection to the Library.
