Historical Note:

Everett Burton Helm, 1913-1999. Helm was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, July 17, 1913; earned his B.A. in 1934 from Carleton College and his M.A. and Ph.D. at Harvard in 1936 and 1939 respectively. He later studied composition with Gian Francesco Malipiero and Ralph Vaughan Williams and musicology with Alfred Einstein. He married artist Elizabeth Albee in August 1955.

Helm taught music and lectured at various colleges and universities in the United States and Europe until 1968. He moved permanently to Europe in 1950 and has lived in Italy since 1963. His writings are chiefly music reviews but he has also published several monographs including works on Bela Bartok, Franz Liszt, and Tchaikovsky.

Helm established the Everett Helm Visiting Fellowship for scholars conducting research at the Lilly Special Collections Library at Indiana University in Bloomington, where Helm's private papers and manuscript collections are now held.
