Name: Brichford, Maynard J.


Historical Note: Maynard Brichford was born August 6, 1926 in Madison, Ohio. He received a B.A. degree from Hiram College and an M.S. (American History) degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1951. During WWII, Brichford served in the U.S. Navy. From 1953-1956, Brichford worked as an assistant archivist for the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. From 1956-1959, he was a methods and procedures analyst at the Illinios State Archives. In 1959, Brichford returned to Wisconsin to serve as the records management supervisor for the Wisconsin Department of Administration. From 1963 until his retirement in 1995, Brichford served as the head archivist for the University of Illinois. He was elected to the Society for American Archivists Council for a term from 1965-1969, was elected as a Fellow in 1970, was elected Vice President in 1978, and served as president of the organization from 1979-1980. In June of 2017, he was awarded the Chancellor's Medal for his lifetime of research on Illinois History and his work with the University of Illinois Archives.
