Burrill; reorganization of the Graduate School and appointment of David Kinley as dean in 1905; the 1907 $100,000 appropriation; statistical growth and changes; administrative problems of Dean Kinley (1905-1917); graduate education, research and publication programs; development of the graduate faculty; growth under Dean Arthur Daniels (1919-33); establishment of a Research Board Committee to allocate funds (1932); Dean Robert Carmichael's administration (1933-47); increased emphasis on scientific and military research; creation of the Graduate College and Dean Louis Ridenour's period (1947-50); didactic and research functions of the college; continued decline of the humanities and social sciences; group projects to study digital computers and biological sciences; applied technological research gains at the expense of pure fundamental research; Fredrick Wall's chairmanship of the Graduate Research Board and the deanship; stabilization and the appointment of associate deans; graduate work in medicine; primary importance of graduate work in training teachers and technicians rather than training researchers and accomplishments of graduate students trained at the University.
