Description: Iowa Survey File of Kendric C. Babcock, Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences and member of the Education Commission to Survey Iowa Educational Institutions. On May 16, 1915, the Iowa State Board of Education requested the United States Bureau of Education to survey their institutions of higher learning by March, 1916. The survey was sought to reduce the cost of the schools and eliminate duplication in higher education. Correspondents include James P. Angell, S. P. Capen, W. H. Gemmill, George E. MacLean, Raymond A. Pearson, Benjamin F. Shambaugh and John G. Bowman. The file includes manuscript drafts of the Commission's report, index cards for items included, supplementary survey material, questions to be asked of colleges and enrollment figures, special reports on colleges (Graduate, Journalism, Commerce, Athletics), tabulation of courses (typed list of all courses given at the three schools), hearings, reports, resolutions, decisions and memoranda sent to the Commission.
