Historical Note:

Donald W. Krummel was born July 12, 1929 in Sioux City, Iowa. He received his B.Mus. (1951), M.Mus. (1953), M.A.L.S. (Masters in Liberal Studies, 1954), and Ph.D. (1958) from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He worked as a Teaching Fellow (1952-1954) and Instructor in Music Literature (1954-1956) while at the University of Michigan. Krummel worked at the Library of Congress from 1956-1961 as the Reference Librarian for the Music Division. From 1962-1969 he worked at the Newberry Library in Chicago, first as the Head of the Reference Department (1962-1964) and later as an Associate Librarian from 1964-1969. Professor Krummel taught at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1970-1997) in the School of Information Sciences. He has also served as a faculty member at the Rare Book School at Columbia University, which then moved to the University of Virginia (1990-2008). As of 1997, Krummel is Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois.

Professor Krummel has been the recipient of countless fellowships and grants, including: the Aspen Institute for Humanistic Studies Scholar in Residence (1969); the Henry E. Huntington Library Grant-in-Aid (1965); the Newbery Library Traveling Research Fellow (1969-1970); the University College (London) Honorary Research Fellow (1974-1975); the Guggenheim Fellow (1976-1977); the University of Illinois University Scholar (1991); and the Graduate School of Library and Information Scholar (1993).

Professor Krummel has also received numerous awards and honors including: the Music Library Association, Duckles Award (1983); the American Library Association, G.K. Hall Award (1987); the Beta Phi Mu Award, (1999); the Sonneck Society (Society of American Music), Lowens Award (1989) and Lifetime Achievement Award (2012); the American Printing History Association Laureate Award (2004); the Bibliographical Society of America Honorary Member (2017); project awards from the National Endowment for the Humanities (1976, 1979, 1983), supplemented by support from the Martha Baird Rockefeller Fund (1983); and he was included on the University of Illinois, "Incomplete List of Teachers Ranked as Outstanding by their Students" several times.
