Historical Note: Meyer attended the University of Illinois in the late 1970s and early 1980s, where she studied political science (BA 1981) and social work (MSW 1984). Her feminist interests and activism began while Meyer was in high school. By the 1980s, Meyer participated in many activist groups, like the Grassroots Group of Second Class Citizens who protested for the Equal Rights Amendement and the Divest Now movement which demonstrated against apartheid in South Africa. In 1990, Meyer became the first openly gay candidate to run for Champaign City Council. She served as a part-time faculty member at Parkland College 1993-2012 where she sponsored the Native American film series and was active in the part-time faculty union.
