Administrative subject file, including minutes, correspondence, guidelines, inventories and receipts, on Administrators' Conferences (1931-1938); Admissions and Records (1956-1965); Allerton House Conference on Human Rights (1965); Campus Unrest (1970); work of Center Director William Gilbert (1940-1978); use of human subjects in experiments (1963-1976); Psychological Clinic (1956-1973); Department of Psychology controversy over creation of professional doctorate - Psy.D., (1959-1972); Veterans Administration and consulting (1952-1977); Illinois Psychological Association (1941, 1945-1962); intimidation (1969-1975); psychological self study by teaching machines (1961-1964); and suicide prevention (1966-1968). Also includes annual reports (1938-1987) and APA reports (1965-1986), director's general correspondence, and Counseling Center evaluative materials (1977-1987).

Biographical Note

Appearing as the Student Counseling Bureau in May 1949, this unit assisted students with educational, vocational, and personal problems.1 By 1956 its name appeared as the Student Counseling Service.2 In 1970 the Board of Trustees changed the name of the Student Counseling Service to the Psychological and Counseling Center, to reflect more clearly the nature of services available there.3 By 1989 it was listed as the Counseling Center, and with vocational, academic, personal, and interpersonal problems; its services included workshops, classes, individual, couple, and group counseling, as well as consultative services to University staff and departments.4
