Scope and Contents of the Materials

Papers of August Lynn Altenbernd (1918-2005), Professor of English (1954-1984), contain biographical material (1971, 1990); English Department administrative records (1968-1987); manuscripts; correspondence; and research drafts and publications (1948-1995); subjects include curriculum revision (1968-1987), a nomination for Campus Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching (1984), and academic studies of American literary figures, including Mark Twain, Henry Roth, Edith Wharton, and Frank Norris.

Biographical Note

August Lynn Altenbernd (1918-2005), received his B.S. (1939), M.A. (1949), and Ph.D (1954) from Ohio State University, and served as Professor of English  at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from 1954 until his retirement in 1984.  Professor Altenbernd held various administrative positions at UIUC, including Head of the English Department (1966-1971) and Associate Dean of the Graduate College (1980-1983 and 1990).   He also published widely on topics relating to various British and American authors and nineteenth-century travel writing, and wrote or collaborated on a number of textbooks for the study of literature, poetry, and drama.
