Daily Flight and Rental Records including completed forms concerning Army Liaison Pilot training (1947-49); hangar aircraft accidents (1949-51); aircraft rentals involving the aviation psychology program (1950-54), glider tows (1950-51), crop spraying (1950-51), photography (1950-51) and air tours (1950-53); charter service reservations (1950-59); university staff requests for transportation or aircraft rentals (1950-60); staff aircraft rentals (1950-60); student aircraft rentals (1950-60); student rental requests (1961-62); stores vouchers involving staff rentals (1959-61); radio station log sheets (1952-54) and monthly airport traffic reports (1948-58). Aircraft request forms include: the name of person initiating request, his department, destination, date, passengers, method of payment, appropriation account number, and purpose of trip. The pilot provides the aircraft number, nature of flight, total miles, departure and return times, flight time, number of passengers, and total passenger house along with the total charge and voucher number supplied by the operations clerk. Staff rental forms include the name, address, pilot certificate number, rating, destination, route, date, aircraft make and number, time and duration of trip, payment method, invoice number, total charge. Student rental forms contain similar information. Most files are incomplete for the years 1954- to 1957.

Biographical Note

Dedicated on October 26, 1945, "the University of Illinois Airport was conceived and has been developed to implement a comprehensive program of education and research in aeronautics and to provide commercial and private landing facilities for the promotion of air transportation and national defense."1 On October 18, 1961, it was renamed the University of Illinois-Willard Airport in honor of Arthur Willard who was president of the University (1934-36) and instrumental in the airport's establishment.2

Airport Plant and Services, a department of the Aviation Institute, has the responsiblity of maintaining and planning the physical plant which serves the Research, Academics, Flight Services and Aircraft Maintenance departments of the Institute.3
