Chester Charles Zych was born on May 30, 1921 in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, to Anthony and Victoria Zych. He received his B.S. from the University of New Hampshire in 1953 and his M.S. and PhD degrees from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 1955 and 1957, respectively. Professor Zych became assistant professor of horticulture at the University of Illinois in 1959 and full professor in the early 1970s. He retired in 1980.
