William Yale Research Collection contains materials collected by Ohio State University doctoral students Sandra Babione and Martha Croft pertaining to biographical research on William Yale (1887-1975), diplomat, author, professor at University of New Hampshire and Boston University, and expert of Near East affairs, including reports, memoranda, correspondence, manuscripts, newspaper clippings, lectures, and drafts of articles photocopied from the William Yale Papers Harvard University, Boston University, and Yale University, microfilm reels of U.S. Department of State reports held in the National Archives, research notes by Sandra Babione and Martha Croft, bibliographies by Martha Croft, and supplemental research material, including photocopies of books and dissertations, articles, speeches, and announcements, collected and annotated by Martha Croft. Topical area documented include Yale's initial appointment as Department of State special agent (1917), Wartime Intelligence Reports (1917-19), events of World War I in Near East, the Ottoman Empire and its dissolution, Near East diplomacy, the Balfour Declaration and Zionism (1917-19), the Paris Peace Conference (1919), the American Section of the International Commission on Mandates in Turkey (King-Crane Commission) (1919), T.E. Lawrence (1926, 1935-36), Yale's autobiographical manuscript, It Takes So Long (ca. 1938), World War II in the Near East (1942-45), Near East Affairs re: Israel, Palestine, Suez, and Iran (1951-57, 1964), and the Hocking-Yale Project (1964-66), an effort by William Ernest Hocking and William Yale to take constructive action to ameliorate the Israel-Arab conflict and assist those affected by it.

Processing Information: These materials were donated by Ernestine King, descendent of Henry Churchill King , via Janice Terry of Marietta, Ohio, to the University of Illinois Archives in May 2010. Mrs. King acquired the materials in November 1986 from Martha Croft of Ohio State University, who began conducting biographical research on William Yale in ca. 1979. When Ms. Croft began researching, she acquired the research materials of Sandra Babione, who previously had been conducting similar research starting in 1970. The materials contained in this series encompass records collected by both Ms. Babione and Ms. Croft over the life of the research Accompanying the materials upon their donation the University Archives was a transfer list authored by Mrs. King. This document details the information about the materials as Mrs. King ascertained them, including to whom, Sandra Babione or Martha Croft, Mrs. King attributed the collection / creation of the records. This document is included in the “Provence, Courtesy of Ernestine King, 2010" folder. With regard to organization, documents on letter sized paper are found in boxes 1 and 2, while documents on legal sized paper can be found in boxes 3 and 4. For legal sized materials that are similar to letter sized materials in this series, please refer to the description of the materials in Box 1 and Box 2 for clarification.
