Administrative History of Creating Unit
The Illinois Transportation Archaeological Research Program (ITARP) is a product of a long-term cooperative effort between the University of Illinois and the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) in the preservation of the state's important archaeological resources. It began in 1959 with the newly created Illinois Archaeological Survey, continued in 1980 when the IDOT statewide survey program was transferred to the Resource Investigation Program, and further continued with the formation of ITARP in 1994. The establishment of ITARP was the result of IDOT's interest in developing a centralized program to facilitate its cultural resources protection efforts.
