On June 15, 1966 the Board of Trustees established the Office of Chancellor for the Champaign-Urbana campus.1 The Chancellor is appointed by the Board of Trustees following nomination by the President. The Chancellor performs those duties that are assigned to him by the President and that are consistent with the Statutes of the University and the actions of the Board of Trustees. The Chancellor is assisted by vice-chancellors for academic affairs, administrative affairs, campus affairs, and research.

The Office of Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs, established April 19, 1967, is aided by an Associate Vice-Chancellor and Director of the Office of Planning and Evaluation.2
Responsible to the Vice-Chancellor for Campus Affairs, effective October 1, 1972, are the divisions of housing, parking and transportation, telecommunications, the Illini Union, and the Assembly Hall. 3
On October 1, 1972, the Division of Operations and Maintenance came under the authority of the Vice-Chancellor for Administrative Affairs.
The Office of Vice-Chancellor for Research and Dean of the Graduate College grew out of the Office of Associate Vice-Chancellor for Research and Development, formerly under the Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs.4
