In 1877, the Board of Trustees established the department of Free Hand Drawing (and Designing) in the School of Art and Design.[sup]1[/sup] In 1931, the College of Fine and Applied Arts was formed, which included the Department of Art and Design.[sup]2[/sup] Later that year the Department of Art and Design was changed to the Department of Art.[sup]3[/sup] In 1972 the name was changed to the Department of Art and Design.[sup]4[/sup] In 1931 it adopted a fine arts degree in painting and correlated the work in art along the lines of a specific professional curriculum.[sup]5[/sup] From this initial undergraduate program it developed its area offerings. In 1972 it offered a fine arts degree in painting; in art education, (1935);[sup]6[/sup] in industrial design, (1937);[sup]7[/sup] in the history of art (1951);[sup]8[/sup] and crafts (1960).[sup]9[/sup] In 1964, baccalaureates in medical art and sculpture were established.[sup]10[/sup] The transformation of the degree in commercial design, (1937),[sup]11[/sup] and itsreplacement by one in advertising design in 1949,[sup]12[/sup] were in turn replaced by a degree in graphic design in 1966.[sup]13[/sup] fine arts master's degrees: in art education, (1945)[sup]14[/sup] and in the history of art (1949)[sup]15[/sup] were simplified into arts master's degrees in 1953 while a new fine arts master's degree in design was established.[sup]16[/sup] In 1955, the original fine arts master's degree in painting (1949)[sup]17[/sup] was transformed into one sharing the disciplines of painting and graphics[sup]18[/sup] and replaced in 1960 by one in painting and printmaking.[sup]19[/sup] The graduate program was rounded out by a fine arts master's degree in sculpture and a doctorate in art education offered in conjunction with the College of Education (1966)[sup]20[/sup] and the philosophy doctorate in the history of art (1969).[sup]21[/sup] In 1981 the Department of Art and Design was redesignated the School of Art andDesign.[sup]22[/sup] The School offers a Bachelors of Fine Arts in art education, crafts, graphic design, history of art, industrial design, painting, and sculpture.[sup]23[/sup] It offers a Masters in art education, art history, fine arts, and a Doctorate in art education and art history.[sup]24[/sup]
