The collection consists of manuscript and published musical compositions and arrangements created by Joseph Olivadoti and his father, Giuseppe, between 1892 and 1970. In addition there are photographs, newsclippings, correspondence, and concert programs documenting Joseph Olivadoti's transatlantic story of transition from Italian born oboist to naturalized American composer, band musician and teacher during the twentieth century.
Joseph Olivadoti (1893-1977) was born in Italy and immigrated from Cortale, Italy to the United States in 1911. During his early years in America he performed oboe for New York City's Italian community bands and orchestras. He eventually became a member of Chicago's "Million Dollar Band" (1927-37) lead by Harold Bachman and during World War II served in the U.S. Navy Band (1942-45). He eventually moved to California after the war and became a member of the Long Beach, California Municipal Band (1958-69). Throughout his career he composed music for band, created numerous instrumental music method books, and taught private music lessons.
