American Merchant Marine Library Association | The American Library Association Archives

Name: American Merchant Marine Library Association

Historical Note:

The American Merchant Marine Library Association (AMMLA) was created in 1921 to "establish and promote a professional Library Service for the benefit of the personnel of the American Merchant Marine, United States Coast Guard ships, stations, lightships and lighthouses" (1). In October 1946, at the behest of AMMLA, the ALA set up a special committee to review AMMLA's operations and make recommendations (2). Terence J. Hoverter and Luis E. Bejarano were the leading members of the committee until it disbanded in the early 1950s.
