Historical Note:

In 1982 the Committee on Organization elevated the status of the Ethnic Materials Information Exchange (EMIE) Task Force to the status of a Round Table (1). At the Annual Meeting held in Washington, D.C., on June 29, 1998, EMIE changed its name to Ethnic and Multicultural Information Exchange Round Table (EMIERT) to reflect the more encompassing tasks now undertaken by this Round Table.

EMIE's objectives are:

1. To serve as a source of information on ethnic collections, services, and programs

2. To organize task forces, institutes, and workshops to carry out the functions of the Round Table

3. To develop for annual conferences, forums, symposia, and programs that deal with the key issues of ethnicity and librarianship

4. To maintain a liaison with the Office of Library Outreach Services and cooperate with other ALA units, including the caucuses in INT projects for betterment of outreach services

5. To disseminate the work of the Round Table through a program of publications (2).

EMIE's officers include a chairman, vice-chairman, secretary, membership director/treasurer, chairman for public relations and eight members-at-large (3).
