Brief Description: Published proceedings of annual conferences, contains reports and minutes of council sessions, divisional and committee meetings, registers of attendance and papers read before the conferences (1876-1948, 1950-71), and transcript of the General Sessions, includes committee reports, addresses of welcome, resolutions, presentation of awards, and speeches (1921-48, 1950-69). Note: Proceedings for the 1876-77, 1879 and 1880 conferences are from the Library Journal conference number for the year, the other conference proceedings were published by the ALA. From 1907 to 1948 the proceedings were incorporated into the ALA Bulletin. Prior to 1955, the General Session transcripts do not include all papers read at the sessions. The early proceedings (1876-1906) include papers on indexes, library legislation, library buildings, classification, charging systems, government publications, reader's guides and other aids, foreign libraries, book selection, the role of the public library and reading for the young. The series includes ALA Papers and Proceedings v. 4 (Record Series 5/1/1 contains proceedings for 1950-. Record Series 1/1/1 contains proceedings for General Session Meetings [1958, 1963, 1965, 1969, 1973] and Membership Meetings [1952, 1961-63, 1966-74]).

Biographical Note for Conference Arrangements Office :

The Conference Arrangements Office was established in 1968 as a unite of the Administrative Services Department of the American Library Association (1). Its origins date back to 1957 when a Conference Program Arrangements unit was established as part of the Program and Membership Services Department (2). From 1964 to 1966, the Conference Arrangements Office was known as the Annual Conference and Midwinter Meeting Executive Committee (3). Responsibility for administering the unit has shifted between ALA departments over the years including Program and Membership Services (1957-59), Administrative and Fiscal Services (1960-61), Executive Office (1973-81), Fiscal Services (1982-84), and Communications Services (1985- ) (4).

The purpose of the Conference Arrangements Office is to coordinate all arrangements, excluding program, for the two annual meetings of the Association. Activities include handling requests for facilities, exhibit space, conference site information, program scheduling and placement of advertisements in the Official Program (5).
