Scope and Contents of the Materials

Records of the Library-Anthropology Resource Group (LARG) consisting of correspondence and notes (1970-1998), meeting minutes (1971-1998), financial reports (1989-1993), anthropology bibliographies and biographies, serial publications, publication drafts, reviews, contracts and correspondence, member lists and addresses, and anthropology titles from card catalogs from the Field Museum and Midwest Inter-Library Center. Publications include Anthropological Bibliographies : a Selected Guide, International Dictionary of Anthropologists, and Serial Publications in Anthropolgy. Correspondents include Sol Tax, Francis X. Grollig, Margo Smith, Yvonne Damien, Paul Hockings, Michele Calhoun, Hans Panofsky, Lee Dutton, Thomas Mann, and Chris Winters.

LARG was a cooperative of anthropologists and librarians in the Chicago area to discuss the bibliographic needs in the field of anthropology and explore the development of useful reference publications. Records were previously held by the Field Museum.

Biographical Note

Library-Anthropology Resource Group (LARG) was founded in 1971 by anthropologist Sol Tax, along with Slavic bibliographer Jan Wepsich and Francis X. Grollig. LARG was formed as a cooperative of anthropologists and librarians in the Chicago area institutions including the Field Museum, Loyola University, Northeastern University, Northwestern University, Roosevelt University, the University of Chicago, and the University of Illinois, Chicago Circle Campus. The group discussed the bibliographic needs in the field of anthropology and explored the development of useful reference publications. It was a voluntary group without an administrative structure, but its activities were coordinated by editors of publication projects. The group produced several books, including Serial Publications in Anthropology, Anthropological Bibliographies : a Selected Guide, and International Dictionary of Anthropologists.
