The Special Libraries Association (SLA) was founded in 1909 by John Cotton Dana. The Division of Advertising and Marketing (DAM) was founded in 1942 from the earlier Commerce Division. The Division of Advertising and Marketing has a national membership of information professional from advertising agencies and advertising marketing departments of consumer companies. The DAM mission is defined on its website as:
"Established in 1942, and celebrating its 65th Anniversary, the Advertising & Marketing Division is concerned with the collection, retrieval, and dissemination of information devoted to advertising, marketing and related disciplines, and in the management of libraries and information centers in these areas."
The number of members as of the Annual Conference in June 2007 was 299.
