Administrative History
At the Kansas City ALA 1968 Annual Conference a petition was presented at the annual membership meeting asking for the formation of a Social Responsibilities Round Table (SRRT) to provide a forum for discussion of major issues of the times and the responsibilities of librarians in relation to those issues (1). The Committee of Organization reported the matter to the ALA Council (2). The ALA established a Committee on the SRRT at its 1969 Washington D.C. Midwinter Meeting (3), which held an organizational meeting for the SRRT at the Atlantic City ALA 1969 Annual Conference (4). At the Annual Conference a Constitution was drawn up based upon the idea of aggressive volunteers. Task Forces addressed the issues of library education, intellectual freedom, black librarians, community participation in libraries, humanization of library personnel, ALA reorganization, and publishing (5). In 1983 the SRRT Task Forces were "Alternatives in Print," Coretta Scott King Award, Ethnic Materials Information Exchange, Feminist Task Force, Gay Liberation, International Human Rights, Library Union, Men's Issues, Peace Information Exchange, and Tools for Consciousness Raising (6).
