Scope and Contents of the Materials

Papers of Patricia Schuman, President (1991-92), includes articles, correspondence, interviews, reports, speeches, and photographs concerning administrative duties, cultural diversity, inaugural activities, Israeli censorship, library funding, school libraries, the Washington Office, WHCLIST, and legislative issues; also included are materials on media campaigns: Library Advocacy Now!, Call for America's Libraries, Libraries Change Lives, Rally for America's Libraries, Right to Know, Write for America's Libraries, and Writers Who Love Libraries.

Biographical Note

Patricia G. Schuman graduated from the University of Cincinnati and then went on to earn an M.S. in librarianship from Columbia University. She was president of ALA from 1991 to 1992, during which she created a media campaign focusing on the public's right to know and founded ALA's first Speaker's Network. She also founded ALA's "Library Advocacy NOW!" effort and helped to found the Social Responsibilities Roundtable and the Feminist Task Force [1]. In addition to serving as ALA treasurer from 1984 to 1988 [2], she chaired many committees, including Legislation, International Relations, Public Awareness Committee, the @ your library campaign, the Core Values of Librarianship Task Force, and the Presidential Task Force on Pay Equity and Better Salaries for Librarians. Along with John Vincent Neal, she co-founded Neal-Schuman Publishers in 1976, which became a part of ALA Publishing in 2011. In 2014 she was named a lifelong member of the United for Libraries board [1] and received an ALA Honorary Membership, ALAâ??s highest honor [3].
