Papers of Clarence R. Graham (1907-1989), ALA President (1950-51) and Louisville Free Public Library Director (1942-77), including correspondence, memoranda, press releases, reports of the Executive Board and committees. Files contain records pertaining to attempted censorship (1950-51), the Intellectual Freedom Committee (1950-52), the Out-of-Print Books Survey (1951), the ALA-sponsored Regional Institutes on Ward and Postwar Issues (1943), the 75th Anniversary Celebration (1951) and membership issues.

Biographical Note

Charles R. Graham studied English at the University of North Carolina from 1924 to 1927 and at the University of Louisville in 1934, then earned a B.S. in Library Science from Western Reserve University in 1935, and finally went on to study education at Northwestern University from 1937 to 1938 [1]. Most notably in his career, Graham was a long-time director of the Louisville Free Public Library in Kentucky [2]. He served as president of ALA from 1950 to 1951, having been nominated over his opposing candidate, Carl Milam, in a controversial election in 1949 [3]. He was also president of the Southeastern Library Association from 1948 to 1950 and president of the Kentucky Library Association from 1946 to 1947. Graham was a library consultant for various projects, including the Milwaukee Public Library renovation in 1952, the Macon (Georgia) Public Library in 1956, the Madison (Indiana) Public Library in 1964, and the Bartholomew County (Indiana) Public Library in 1965. He was a Visiting Associate Professor in the Department of Library Science at the University of Kentucky in 1963 [1]. He died on January 28, 1989 [4].
