Biographical Note
William S. Dix was born in 1910 and died on February 22, 1978. He earned both a Bachelor's and a Master's degree from the University of Virginia, as well as a PhD in American literature from the University of Chicago. He was Princeton's University Librarian from 1953 until 1975 when he retired. He served as the ALA President from 1969 to 1970. In addition to being a lifelong and Honorary member of the ALA [1], he was chairman of the Intellectual Freedom Committee (1951-1953), chairman of the International Relations Committee (1955-1960), and First Vice-President (1968). Dix also participated in the Association of Research Libraries, including serving as Executive Secretary (1957-1959), President (1962-1963), and chairman of the Association of Research Libraries' Shared Cataloging Committee. He was a member of the United States National Commission for UNESCO and the Libary of Congress's National Commission on New Technological Uses of Copyrighted Works (CONTU) [2]. In 1969, he was a Melvil Dewey Medal Recipient [3].
