Correspondence of Department of Membership Organization and Information, contains monthly reports of the chief of the department, Cora M. Beatty, and of headquarters personnel responsible for special membership, public relations and membership publication (1941-44), includes samples of promotional literature and from letters used to recruit members, conference files with press releases and circulars sent from the department to ALA members and exhibitors, and correspondences files (1936-44) with circular letters from headquarters and form Membership and Friends of the Library Committee chairmen to committee members, ALA committee chairmen and ALA members. Correspondence includes membership promotion and statistics, new members, relations with state chapters and national affiliates, group meetings at annual conferences, work with committees concerned with ALA organization, constitution and by-laws, and elections, and ballot samples distributed for ALA elections.

The Department of Membership Organization and Information apparently was dissolved in the 1956-57 reorganization and the duties assigned to the Deputy Executive Director. In 1961, the Membership Promotion Office was established and the duties of its Coordinator were to provide information on application for membership and to serve as the staff liaison to the Membership Committee. In 1973-74 it was dissolved and the duties went to the Public Information Office (1).
