Lewis F. Stieg earned his Ph.D. in Library Science at the University of Chicago, in 1935. He served as librarian at Hamilton College and Stetson University. Between 1948 and 1955, he worked as the assistant director of the Library School at the University of Illinois and later the university librarian and director of the Graduate College of Library Science at the University of Southern California. He concluded his career as chair and professor of the library school at Northern Illinois University, retiring in 1978.

Stieg published widely on library education. He was also the founding president of the Library Education Division (LED), a membership group within the American Library Association. The LED was established in 1946 to support library education. He was a member of the Advisory Committee for the Department of Librarianship at Ankara University and the Advisory Subcommittee for the University of the Philippines Institute of Library Science. From 1962 to 1966, he served as the president of the latter.
