Historical Note: Anita R. Schiller was born in 1926 in New York. Schiller earned a master’s degree in library science from Pratt Institute. She worked at the University of Illinois Library and as a visiting scholar at Rutgers University before working at the University of California San Diego in 1970. At UCSD, she served as a reference librarian, social science bibliographer, and data services librarian until she retired in 1991. In 1968, Schiller published “Characteristics of Professional Personnel in College and University Libraries,” a landmark study on the pervasive patten of gender inequality within the library profession. She continued to study salary disparities between male and female librarians through the 1970s. Schiller was an active member of ALA, serving on ALA Council, the SRRT Feminist Task Force, the Committee on the Status of Women in Librarianship, and the President's Task Force on Better Salaries and Pay Equity for Library Workers. In 1985, she received the ALA Equality Award and in 2007 receive an ALA Honorary Membership. Schiller died in 2021.
