Historical Note: Edward G. Holley was born in 1927 in Pulaski, Tennessee. He received his B.A. in English from David Lipscomb College in Nashville in 1949. In 1951 Holley received his M.A. in Library Science from George Peabody College for Teachers, and in 1961 he received a PhD in Library Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In 1972, Holley took a position as a dean and professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Information and Library Science (UNC Chapel Hill SILS). Holley served in this position from 1972 to 1985, and in 1989 became an eminent William Rand Kenan, Jr. Professor. Holley was president of the ALA 1974-1985, and retired from his position at UNC Chapel Hill SILS in 1995. Holley passed away in 2010.
