Historical Note: Henry Vail Deale was born in 1915 in Baltimore, Maryland. He received his B.A. from DePauw University in 1936, a B.L.S. from the University of Illinois Library School in 1937, and an M.A. in English Literature from Drake University in 1950. During World War II Deale was a conscientious objector, and served as a part-time librarian for a civilian public service camp. Deale served as the director of libraries at Beloit College in Wisconsin from 1953 to 1980. He also received two Fulbright awards, the first of which was served in 1965-66 building the first academic library in Iran at Pahlavi University in Shiraz, and for the second he served on the faculty at the University of Tehran. Deale served on the American Library Association council and as president of the Wisconsin Library Association. Deale strove towards peace and civil and human rights in many aspects of his work, including in his work with the Beloit Peace Council, as a member of the Beloit Chapter of the NAACP, as a charter member of the Leon Peterson Scholarship Committee, and many more.
