Historical Note: Richard M. Dougherty earned a B.S. in 1959 from Perdue University, as well as a M.L.S. in 1961 and Ph.D. in 1963, both from Rutgers University. He was the associate director of libraries at the University of Colorado from 1966 to 1970, a professor at Syracuse University from 1970 to 1972, and a publisher of the Journal of Academic Librarianship from 1974 to 1994. He was the director of the University Library at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor from 1978 to 1988, acting dean of the School of Library Science from 1984 to 1985, and professor of library science from 1978 until he retired from active faculty on December 31, 1997. He is now professor emeritus of information. Dougherty served as president of ALA from 1990 to 1991. From ALA, he received the Hugh C. Atkinson Memorial Award in 1988 and the Joseph Lippincott Award in July 1997. He also received an honorary degree from Perdue University in 1991 and another from Stellenbosch University in South Africa in 1995. Dougherty is the president of his own consulting firm, Dougherty and Associates.
