Historical Note: S. Hastings Grant (1828-1910) went to school at Princeton (1847) and Yale (1854). He was a librarian for seventeen years at the Mercantile Library and twelve years the Superintendent of the New York Produce Exchange, then was appointed Controller in 1883. He also spent six years as an editor of Charles Norton's Literary Gazette and Publishers' Circular, and sepnt eight years as an associate editor of the American Publishers' Circular (1).
