Collection Development and Evaluation Section | The American Library Association Archives

Name: Collection Development and Evaluation Section

Historical Note: On 1986 the Reference and Adult Services Division (RASD) established the ad hoc Collection Development and Evaluation Committee to "investigate the need to establish structure in RASD to address collection development and evaluation concerns..." (1). In June 1987 at the ALA annual conference, the RASD Board of Directors voted to establish the Collection Development and Evaluation Section (CODES) (2). Its purpose is "to develop the professional; skills and knowledge of reference and adult services librarians who are involved in collection development and evaluation (CD/E)" (3). Its other functions include dissemination of information to librarians involved in CD/E, to promote communication among them, to provide continuing education and training opportunities, to advise the RASD on CD/E issues, and to act as a liaison between RASD and Research and Technical Services Division units with related concerns. The committees under CODES today include Collection Development Policies, Collection Evaluation Techniques, Computer-based Methods and Resources, Continuing Education, Reference Collection Development and Evaluation, Liaison with Users, and Staffing and Organization of Collection Development/Evaluation.
