Name: Hornback, Miriam (1926-1991)


Historical Note: Miriam Hornback worked for ALA for her entire career. She began as a junior secretary on June 12, 1944. Most notably, she was a longtime secretary to the ALA Council and Executive Board, and she was also a documenter of Council and Executive Board actions from 1969 to 1991. She served ALA for a total of 47 years. In that time, she worked with 47 presidents and seven executive directors, and she attended more than 80 Annual Conferences and Midwinter Meetings. She was a member of ALA for 38 years. She announced that she would retire in January 1992, but she died unexpectedly on April 1, 1991 [1]. ALA has an annual scholarship named in her honor [2].
