Historical Note: Patricia R. Harris was born on February 12, 1948 in Rome, Italy. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from Randolph-Macon Woman's College in 1969 and a Master of Science in Library Science from the University of North Carolina in 1970. At the beginning of her career, she worked as an assistant reference librarian at Princeton University (1970-71) and assistant to the Director of the Office for Intellectual Freedom (1972-1975) before her job as assistant to the Executive Director of ALA (1975-79). After leaving her ALA position, she was a consultant (1979-80) and then an associate with the Ozarks Educational Research Initiative (OERI) of the U.S. Education Department beginning in 1981. She has been a member of the ALA Government Documents Round Table (GODORT), and she co-edited Librarians, Censorship, and Intellectual Freedom (1972) [1].
