Scope and Contents of the Materials

Library postcard collection of Sjoerd Koopman contains almost 18,000 pictorial and photographic postcards of libraries all over the world, includes public libraries, private libraries, academic libraries, library interiors, reading rooms, and bookmobiles. The ALA Archives holds digital copies of over 2,400 cards from this collection depicting libraries throughout the United States; the majority of them are also available as physical objects. New objects are added periodically.

There are no physical postcards from Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Utah, or West Virginia.

Acquisition Method: Physical objects were first loaned to the American Library Association Archives. The digital objects were created by the ALA Archives at the University of Illinois Archives. A Deed of Gift was later signed and the ALA Archives has obtained physical postcards for its holdings.
