Scope and Contents of the Materials

Office Subject Files of the Committee on Accreditation containing announcements, correspondence, memoranda, handbooks, flyers, organizational notes, rosters, and reports concerning accreditation of schools; affirmative action; awards; and conferences and meetings, including the Seminar on Accreditation (1972) and the ALA/USDE Conference on Accreditation (1984). Files also document the accreditation activities of the Board of Education in Librarianship (BEL), its correspondence and announcements (1940-60), the Revision of Standards (1972) and its correspondence (1971/2), and annual report correspondence (1966-1968), annual report forms (1961-1963, 1966-1976), and annual report statistics (1969-1975)

Biographical Note

On June 21, 1956, the Council created the Committee on Acceditation (COA) (1). It is responsible for the execution of the accreditation program of ALA, and it develops and formulates standards of education for librarianship for the approval of Council (2).
