Brief Description: The scrapbook of the first ALA Conference, titled the "Librarians' Conference Oct. 1876 Letters, etc.," compiled by the Boston Public Library, then rebound in 1926 and presented to ALA for its fiftieth anniversary. The scrapbook includes documentation concerning the founding of the ALA and plans, arrangements and promotional materials for the first conference in 1876, and correspondence with E. C. Arnold, Melvil Dewey, F. Leypoldt, William F. Poole, Lloyd P. Smith, Ainsworth R. Spofford, James L. Whitney, and Justin Winsor.
