Brief Description: This series contains files of Patricia R. Harris, Assistant to the Executive Director (1974-). The series includes ALA Centennial Conference records (1974-76), including plans for the Inaugural Banquet, Opening Night, and Local Arrangements Committee. The series also includes correspondence, information, and publications relating to the White House Conference on Library and Information Services (1977-79). It includes state pre-White House Conferences, and Illinois Regional White House Conference materials (1977-79). It also includes information from the White House Conference coordinator, the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science (1975-76, 1978-79). The series also contains office files of ALA activities, lists, and projects (1978-80), including correspondence and memoranda relating to the Groundbreaking Ceremony at Huron Plaza (1978); and the AlA/Librarian of Congress Public Libraries Project and Center for the Book (1976-77).

Biographical Note for Harris, Patricia R. (1948-) : Patricia R. Harris was born on February 12, 1948 in Rome, Italy. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from Randolph-Macon Woman's College in 1969 and a Master of Science in Library Science from the University of North Carolina in 1970. At the beginning of her career, she worked as an assistant reference librarian at Princeton University (1970-71) and assistant to the Director of the Office for Intellectual Freedom (1972-1975) before her job as assistant to the Executive Director of ALA (1975-79). After leaving her ALA position, she was a consultant (1979-80) and then an associate with the Ozarks Educational Research Initiative (OERI) of the U.S. Education Department beginning in 1981. She has been a member of the ALA Government Documents Round Table (GODORT), and she co-edited Librarians, Censorship, and Intellectual Freedom (1972) [1].
