Scope and Contents of the Materials

Papers of Beverly P. Lynch (ALA President 1985-86), including articles, correspondence, meeting minutes, interviews, reports, and speeches concerning administrative duties, annual and midwinter conferences, campaign and inaugural activities, congressional testimony, international relations, and the de-funding of "Playboy" in Braille. Series also includes materials from her work on the Special Committee on Freedom and Equality of Access to Information (Lacy Commission) from 1985-86; her work as chair of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Accreditation Project under the auspices of ACRL (1986-94); and her work as chair of the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section Ethical Standards Committee (1984-94) and Taskforce on Core Competency (2005-2007); ALA/AAM/SAA Committee on Libraries, Museums, and Archives (CALM) (1979-2007); International Relations Round Table (1994-1996); International Relations Committee (1994-1999, 2008-2011), including the Traditional Cultural Expressions Task Force (2010).

Biographical Note

Beverly P. Lynch was born on December 27, 1936 [1]. She earned a B.S. and a Litt.D. from North Dakota State University, an M.S. from University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison [2]. She was the University Librarian at the University of Illinois at Chicago from 1977 to 1989 before becoming dean of the University of California Los Angeles's (UCLA) School of Library and Information Science. She is a founding director of the California Rare Book School [3]. She is currently the director of the Senior Fellows Program at UCLA and a professor in the Department of Information Studies at UCLA's Graduate School of Education & Information Studies [2]. In 1972, Lynch was appointed Executive Secretary of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL). She was President of ALA from 1985 to 1986. In addition, she has been involved in ALA Council, the Committee on Accreditation, the Budget and Finance Committee, and has chaired the International Relations Committee. She is a founder of the U.S.-China Librarians' conference series. In 2009, she received ALA's Joseph W. Lippincott award, and in 2012, she received the Melvil Dewey Medal Award [3].
