Scope and Contents of the Materials
Papers of Lucille Wert, Chair of the Bylaws committed of the Association of American Library Schools, contains minutes of executive board meetings (1962, 1964-67, 1972-74), a directory of library school educators research competencies (1974), lists of past officers (1962-73), lists of institutional membership (1973- 75), material relating to AALS's incorporation as a not-for-profit institution, includes her editorship of the Journal of Education for Librarianship (1976-80), minutes and reports of the Editorial Board (1976-80), editorial correspondence (1976-80), and correspondence with the ALA Committee on Accreditation (1974- 77), Library Research Round Table (1971-77), H.W. Wilson Library Periodical Award Committee (1976-77), and the Reference Books Bulletin Editorial Board and Committee (1979, 1983-85).
Biographical Note
Lucille M. Wert was born in 1919 in Sioux City, Iowa. She received a B.S. in Library Science from Simmons College in 1945, and went on the University of Illinois to receive her M.S. and PhD in Library Science in 1963 and 1969, respectively. Wert served as the Math and Physics Librarian at the University of Iowa from 1946 to 1948, and in the same position at the University of Chicago from 1948 to 1950. Wert would then return to the University of Illinois, and in 1981 became Assistant Director of the Physical Science and Engineering Libraries. She also served as a professor of Library Science at the University of Illinois. There is a scholarship in her name supporting students pursuing the profession of Chemical Information.
