The ALA Council created the Committee on Organization on June 21, 1956, to replace the Committee on Boards and Committees under the province of Bylaw Article IX, Sections 2(a) and (b) and Sections 4 and 5 (1).
The purpose statement of the Committee, which has remained constant since its inception, reads:
To recommend to Council the establishment or discontinuance of divisions, round tables, and committees, as the needs of the Association may require. Such Sommittee shall define the functions of each division, round table, and committee subject to approval of Council. The Council, upon the recommendation of the Committee on Organization, may establish other standing committees to consider matters of the Association that may require continuity of attention by the members. The Committee on Organization shall recommend the name and size of each committee (2).
The Committee also decides whether or not the ALA will INT representatives to outside organizations requesting official ALA representation. These decisions do not require Council approval (3).
