Scope and Contents of the Materials

Papers and files of Grace T. Stevenson, Deputy Executive Secretary of the ALA (1951-61), including records, statistics, proposals and Allerton Park Conference files (May 2-5,1955), as director of the American Heritage Project (1951-55); the Library Community Project (1956-58), Ruth Warnke, director; and the White House Conference on Children and Youth State activity, publicity, bibliographies and follow-up files (1959-1961). The material includes correspondence on the locations of the original application for a copyright by Melvil Dewey for his Decimal Classification. The series includes retirement papers while working as a consultant (1967-80), including workshops (Oklahoma Library Assoc.,1971); Denver Public Library Staff Development, (1968); Montana State Library summer Institute, (1968); studies and surveys for Libraries serving border areas (1969); involvement with the Arizona State Library, Library Association and Advisory Council; and correspondence, including tribute to Lester Asheim.

Biographical Note

Grace T. Stevenson was born in Morganfield, Kentucky on January 27, 1900. She attended St. Joseph's College in Kentucky from 1917 to 1919 and Evansville College in 1920. Over the course of her career, she worked as an assistant in the executive department of the Evansville Public Library in Indiana (1920-21), a librarian at the Linden Public Library in Indiana (1921), an assistant at the Long Beach Public Library in California (1924-25; 1926-27), and an assistant at the Seattle Public Library (1927-45) before her promotion to head of the adult education and film department (1945-51). She worked as Director of the ALA American Heritage Project from 1951 to 1952 and then as Deputy Executive Director of ALA from 1952 until she retired in 1965.

In addition, Stevenson served on the Advancement Committee of the Fund for Adult Education Scholarship Program from 1953 to 1956, the President's Committee of the White House Conference on Aging from 1960 to 1961, and as a consultant to the University of California's Executive Department in 1966 designing projects in library education. She was a member of many professional associations, including the Arizona State Library Association, the Southwest Library Association (SWLA), the Washington Library Association, the Pacific Northwest Library Association (PNLA), the National Education Association (NEA), NEA's Division of Audio-Visual Instruction (DAVI), and the Adult Education Association, of which she was president from 1959 to 1961. Her professional interest was in adult education [1].
