Scope and Contents of the Materials

Transcripts of proceedings of the Executive Board, including minutes, transcripts, stenographer's notes, dockets and supporting documents about the activities and appointment of committees, budgets, staff salaries, relations of the Executive Board to divisions of ALA and the business of the organization. The series includes transcripts and minutes of meetings with the Committee on Library Cooperation with the Hispanic Peoples and the International Relations Committee (May 1928), the Program Committee (January, December 1930), the Board on Library Extension (October 1939), the officers of divisions (October 1944, July 1951-February 1954) and an open meeting with representatives of Cresap McCormick & Paget regarding the ALA Management Survey (February 1955). The transcript for March 19, 1933 includes notes taken by Alice T. Sukrow. The volume for June 1927 includes transcripts of the Council meetings and the luncheon meeting.

The series includes Executive Board minutes (1909-42) on five microfilm reels containing v.1, 1909-August 21, 1919; v.2-4, September 9, 1919-May 14, 1929; v.5-7, May 18, 1929-May 10, 1936; v.8-10, My 16, 1936-June 18, 1939; and v.11-13, June 24, 1939- June 21, 1942. A subject index to microfilm minutes is available.

Biographical Note

Established in 1876, the Executive Board consists of the officers of the Association, the immediate past president, and 8 members elected by Council from its membership for four year terms. The members of the Executive Board are members of Council (1) Acting for the Council, the Executive Board administers the established policies and programs. As the management board of ALA, it is responsible for headquarters operations, subject to review by Council, and makes recommendations with respect to policy and operations (2).

The Executive Director is appointed by the Executive Board. The Executive Director is in charge of headquarters and its personnel, carries out the activities provided for in the budget, and perfroms such other duties as may be assigned. Originally an elected position, the office of Executive Secretary became an appointed position in 1909 (3). The title changed to Executive Director in 1958 (4).
