Historical Note: The Joint Committee on Library Work as a Career was created following a Conference of Recruiting for the library Profession (November 22-23, 1947) called by the Board of Education for Librarianship to plan, sponsor and carry out a nationwide and profession-wide program of recruiting new personnel for library work and unifying the recruiting programs of constituent national library organizations. The committee was directed by Francis R. St. John (1947-49), Lewis F. Stieg (1950-51), Helen Focke (1952- 53), Sarah K. Vann (1954-55) and John F. Harvey (1956-57).
