Metropolitan Libraries Section | The American Library Association Archives
Name: Metropolitan Libraries Section
Historical Note:
Throughout much of its first eighteen years, the PLA included one section, the Armed Forces Librarians Section. At the ALA Centennial Conference held at Chicago in 1976, the PLA Board of Directors voted to organize Alternative Education Section (PLAES) and the Public Library System Section (PLSS). The latter was created to provide better service through the organization of public library systems, provide a forum for discussion of public library systems' problems, provide continuing education, explain public library systems to the American Public, and relate to other cooperative endeavors of concern to public libraries (1).
