From the verso: "Workshop of Phidias
Phidias standing beside the small model of his work 'Athena' for the Parthenon, discusses the work with Pericles and his lovely wife Aspasia, while several Greek gentlemen stand about the studio. Out sid is the full sized model of Athena upon which two workmen are placing plates of gold. Probably about 450 B.C."
