Historical Note:

In 1877, the Board of Trustees established the department of Free Hand Drawing (and Designing) in the School of Art and Design.1 In 1931, the College of Fine and Applied Arts was formed, which included the Department of Art and Design.2 Later that year the Department of Art and Design was changed to the Department of Art.3 In 1972 the name was changed to the Department of Art and Design.4 In 1931 it adopted a fine arts degree in painting and correlated the work in art along the lines of a specific professional curriculum.5 From this initial undergraduate program it developed its area offerings. In 1972 it offered a fine arts degree in painting; in art education, (1935);6 in industrial design, (1937);7 in the history of art (1951);8 and crafts (1960).9 In 1964, baccalaureates in medical art and sculpture were established.10 The transformation of the degree in commercial design, (1937),11 and itsreplacement by one in advertising design in 1949,12 were in turn replaced by a degree in graphic design in 1966.13 fine arts master's degrees: in art education, (1945)14 and in the history of art (1949)15 were simplified into arts master's degrees in 1953 while a new fine arts master's degree in design was established.16 In 1955, the original fine arts master's degree in painting (1949)17 was transformed into one sharing the disciplines of painting and graphics18 and replaced in 1960 by one in painting and printmaking.19 The graduate program was rounded out by a fine arts master's degree in sculpture and a doctorate in art education offered in conjunction with the College of Education (1966)20 and the philosophy doctorate in the history of art (1969).21 In 1981 the Department of Art and Design was redesignated the School of Art andDesign.22 The School offers a Bachelors of Fine Arts in art education, crafts, graphic design, history of art, industrial design, painting, and sculpture.23 It offers a Masters in art education, art history, fine arts, and a Doctorate in art education and art history.24
