Name: Brichford, Maynard J.

Historical Note: Maynard Birchford was born August 6, 1926. He received a B.A. degree from Hiram College and an M.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin. During WWII, Birchford served in the U.S. Navy. From 1953-1956, Birchner worked as an assistant archivist for the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. From 1956-1959, he was a procedural analysist at the Illinios State Archives. In 1959, Birchner returned to Wisconsin to serve as the records management supervisor for the Wisconsin Department of Adminstration. From 1963 until his retirement, Birchner served as the head archivist for the University of Illinois. He was elected to the Society for American Archivists council in 1965, became a fellow in 1970, was elected Vice President in 1978, and served as president of the organization from 1979-1980. In June of 2017, he was awarded the Chancellor's Medal for his lifetime of research on Illinois History and his work with the University of Illinois Archives.
